چکیده

We report observations of the early light curves of GRB060418 and GRB060607A, carried out with the pink robotic telescope REM. A clear peak is detected for both events, which is interpreted as the onset of the afterglow, that is the time at which the fireball starts decelerating. This detection allows to directly measure the initial fireball Lorentz factor, which was found to be Γ0 ≈ 400 for both events, fully confirming the ultrarelativistic nature of gamma-ray burst fireballs. Sampling the light curve before the peak also allows to compute the bolometric fluence of the afterglow, which is 16% of the prompt one in the case of GRB060418.

REM observations of GRB 060418 and GRB 060607A: the onset of the afterglow and the initial fireball Lorentz factor determination

Context. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) emission is believed to originate in highly relativistic fireballs. Aims. Currently, only lower limits were securely set to the initial fireball Lorentz factor Γ0. We aim to provide a direct measure of Γ0. Methods. The early-time afterglow light curve carries information about Γ0, which determines the time of the afterglow peak. We have obtained early observations...

The afterglow onset for GRB 060418 and GRB 060607 A

Gamma-ray burst are thought to be produced by highly relativistic outflows. Although upper and lower limits for the outflow initial Lorentz factor Γ0 are available, observational efforts to derive a direct determination of Γ0 have so far failed or provided ambiguous results. As a matter of fact, the shape of the early-time afterglow light curve is strongly sensitive on Γ0 which determines the t...

GRB 000926 and its optical afterglow: Another evidence for non-isotropic emission

The CCD magnitudes in Cousins R photometric passbands are determined for GRB 000926 afterglow ∼ 2.6 day after trigger of the γ−ray burst. Optical light curves of the afterglow emission are obtained by combining the present measurements with the published ones in B and R passbands. They show a steepening of the flux decay as expected of an anisotropic fireball losing collimation with the fall of...

Pure and Loaded Fireballs in Soft Gamma-ray Repeater Giant Flares

On December 27, 2004, a giant flare from SGR 1806−20 was detected on earth. Its thermal spectrum and temperature suggest that the flare resulted from an energy release of about 1047 erg/sec close to the surface of a neutron star in the form of radiation and/or pairs. This plasma expanded under its own pressure producing a fireball and the observed gamma-rays escaped once the fireball became opt...
